US & SUSTAINABILITY
MR WEEKENDER WAS BORN OUT OF OUR LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS. FOR THOSE BIG MORNINGS IN THE SURF, EPIC AFTERNOONS IN THE SNOW AND LONG DAYS IN THE SUN.
And our commitment to sustainability is motivated by that same love. We want to do our bit to protect the natural environment that gives us so much by ensuring our products are recyclable, reusable and sustainable. We also want to make sure we have a positive effect on our staff and everyone who uses our products.
Here’s what Mr Weekender is doing right now to be a friend to the planet and all the legends living on it.
Our skincare products are made here in New Zealand with 100 percent naturally derived ingredients sourced locally and internationally. We produce a small amount of product at a time to make sure it never ends up in a landfill - only in your bathroom and on that mug of yours.
We use NZ-sourced natural ingredients wherever possible and NEVER include harsh chemicals in our skincare. We also never test our products on animals, only humans. Better for you, better for the environment - we’d call that a win-win.
We’re a small Kiwi, family-owned and run business and because New Zealand is so small, we almost always know who we’re working with personally. We can confirm they’re all absolute champions. Our aim is to create long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships with everyone - we reckon it’s better that way.
Mr Weekender cares about every stage of our skincare’s lifestyle - including shipping. All our shipping material is either roadside recyclable, or compostable, commercially or at home. All our paper tape, eco mailers, packaging and marketing materials are eco-friendly.
The world creates 300 million tonnes of plastic every year - that’s the same weight as the entire human population. Hectic, right?
Plastic is a pain to recycle and reuse and usually ends up in the landfill or floating past you when you’re out for fish or a surf. We wanted a greener alternative so we chucked all of our skincare in easily recyclable and reusable aluminum packaging.
Aluminum is considered one of the world’s most sustainable materials. It can be recycled infinitely, each time using only 5% of the energy needed to make new aluminum. Today recycling aluminum saves over 90 million tonnes of C02 per year, almost triple NZ’s total annual output.
The only bit that’s plastic is the pump on the top of our cleanser. To make it easy to reuse this bit, we sell plastic-free refill bottles - just keep the pump from your first purchase and wack it in the refill. Simple as.
Our clothing will make you look good, but it should make you feel good too. It’s all sourced from NZ local companies and makers that are ethical, slave-free and committed to sustainability.
We’re not just here to sell skincare. Mr Weekender is all about working with organisations that are changing the world for the better, and we’re always looking for new local charities in our community to work with.
That includes good sorts like Project Blue, a group who are fighting for the environment by helping countries around the world find alternatives to plastic, and recycle and reuse the plastic they do manufacture.
Mr. Weekender is partnering with mental health charities to help them keep doing their essential work. We’re all about helping the boys take care of themselves so we commit to Movember annually and aim to raise more for the charity every year that we return.
OUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE
Sustainability is always a work in progress for Mr Weekender. When we’re not ripping down a mountain or a wave, we’re thinking about how we can do even more to reduce our impact on the planet. Here’s what we’re working on right now:
- + Reducing plastic in our supply chain before our product reaches us.
+ Cutting our overall carbon footprint.
+ Finding creative ways to re-use our packaging. Our gift tins make mean little tackle boxes for lures, spare hooks and dive knives.
+ Finding carbon neutral or negative packaging.
+ Becoming a completely circular brand and creating no waste.
+ We aim to become a certified B Corp within five years of launch. B Corps are businesses that reach the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.
We’re a new brand with big goals but we reckon we’ll get there one day - especially if you help us out. We’re keen to hear any ideas from our customers about how we can be more sustainable.
